Let me start off by clarifying, Ebay is not a scam (although after their poor customer service, they now feel like it). Nor is PayPal a scam or a fraud. This is simply the tail of not following the rules closely enough and basically being ousted $1000. Everyone should read this story and learn from it so you will not have the same fate I had.
I am a college student and an avid fan of computer equipment, as you can sort of tell I am a fan of anything to do with computers (hence the website I create). That being said I had a?fairly new?Apple MacBook pro. I decided I wanted one of the new Quad core iMacs with the thunderbolt ports...I like having a good machine thats current and powerful. So first things first I needed the cash. Leaving college for the summer I had no real use for my Macbook Pro, so on ebay it went. It was listed for 7 days with a bunch of bidders. But here is where the story gets interesting.
I received an ebay email from a buyer with a good track record. His address was out of the country and so he asked if I shipped international if he paid the extra money. I said sure, as long as you pay for the additional fee's I have no problem shipping this item overseas. So the bid came down to the last few minutes and this buyer won it. I sent him an updated invoice with the additional shipping fee's. He sent me an email (within ebay) that this item was going to a business client. He sent me the address and paid for the item in full on paypal. I shipped the item out and provided a tracking number.
The next day I awoke to find out that the buyer has requested the funds back on paypal. So I immediately called paypal, they assured me that a full investigation would take place. So I waited about 2 weeks, than I got an email saying basically I was at fault. I lost about $1077 dollars. No, I didn't stop there. I called paypal and talked with 3 different representatives all of which where more than pleasant to deal with and understood my situation. It boiled down to I shipped to an address not on the buyers account (even though he sent emails via ebay with an "updated" address for a client). Apparently if you ship to an address thats not on file you instantly will lose this verdict every time. They said someone hacked into this buyers account and fraudulently bought this item. They told me I could try and talk with Ebay to resolve this some how. In the end though Paypal said there is nothing more we can do.
I was transferred over to ebay customer service. I got an indian girl on the phone (I refuse to say women because she was unprofessional and childish). I explained my story, which she would instantly reply with my first name (...I don't like this when I'm dealing with a customer service scenario) than...this is a paypal issue. I continued to explain what happened a few more times which every time she would just say that. I asked to speak to her supervisor, at this point she got angry and said he is unavailable. I asked when he would be available, she replied not for a while, I said I'll wait. She than said she can't do anything and he can't either. I said I need to speak to a supervisor and she hung up on me. I dialed in again and was waiting for 30mins before I eventually said enough is enough.
Lesson to learn here NEVER SHIP an ebay item to an ebay email request, only the address on the account. Don't make the same mistake I did, also deal with paypal they are much friendlier and way more professional, they even referred me to an internet crime bureau and USPS fraud line. All in all I lost $1000, but hopefully you will learn from my mistakes and not fall in the same trap.
