Discover How To Grow Your Online Business By Using eBay To Almost Cheat Your Way To Online Profits
Here we are summer 2008, it's warmer throughout the world than perhaps it should be, indeed we increasingly have to get used to a world that not only seems to change all the time but where the 'rate of change' itself also increases.
Apart from the climate, national and international politics a subject that has filled millions of column inches (or should that be millimetres) is the contrast between high street sales and online shopping. It is also fascinating to note the way in which 'experts' regards these contrasting forms of commerce.
According to Forrester Research Inc of the USA online retail sales reached $175 billion in 2007, a 21% increase over 2006. It describes this as a 'significant drop' after years of around 25% growth. Furthermore Forrester forecasts that this year that the growth will be 17% up over 2007. 21% - 17%; most traditional high street retailers would sell a close relative to attain that sort of growth.
By contrast the National Retail Federation of America reports that sales for the November/December 2007, 'rose 3% to $469.9
billion, weaker than NRF's projected four percent holiday forecast. This represents the lowest holiday seasonal growth since 2002, when sales rose 1.3%'
17% increase - 3% increase, humm, I wonder where the future lies ?
The BBC in the UK quotes the Office of National Statistics which has declared that retail sales in December were actually down 0.4% compared with November and that the figure for the last three months of 2007 were only 0.4% above those for the previous three months ! The same source, however, reveals that an industry survey suggested that online retail sales for the last three months of 2007 had risen by 50%!
There is still, throughout the world, concern regarding online security, although this seems to be most prevalent in those who have not yet dared to boldly go into the far off galaxy of www. These fears will lessen with increased familiarity with the web, whilst online retailers, very aware of these concerns, constantly strive to make the online experience as secure as possible.
As far as most are concerned online shopping really began with eBay but now there is, in effect, nothing that can't be bought via the internet. Goods delivered to your door from the four corners of the earth from suppliers who, for reasons mentioned above, fall over themselves to provide a first class service knowing that a reputation can be destroyed on the web in a matter of days.
Those ordering from home are often supplied by people working from home, making money online in a way that has not been seen
since before the industrial revolution.
The world is changing rapidly yet perhaps the internet is, ironically, taking us back to a retail experience from the past.
